How can I learn about Astronomy?
There are lots of ways to learn astronomy. You can join an astronomy club and learn from the members, or you could enroll in a course at a local school, or community college, or university. Or you could simply take the time to read up on it on the Internet or in your local library. These are all good methods, but your choice will depend partly on what’s most easily available, whether you’re prepared to spend a lot of money, and your reasons for learning. If you’re just curious, you probably can’t justify the cost of university tuition, but that’s the only option if you want to become a professional astronomer. Personally I have used all of the above methods, over most of my life. As a child, I watched space documentaries and visited astronomers. As a teenager I read every single book I could find on the subject and interrogated the astronomers in my family. As an adult, I scoured the Internet, and a few years ago I enrolled at the University of South Africa for an astronomy degree. Every one of these methods is valid and will teach you plenty. All you have to do is choose what level you want to start at, and dive in!
