What is a Light Year?
First, a light year is a measure of distance and not time – a lot of people make that mistake. So how far is a light year then? It is the distance that a beam of light travels in a year. Since light moves at a speed of three hundred million meters per second, a light year is quite far: just over 9.46 trillion kilometers. Because that number is simply too big for any human brain to really understand, try this: If you travel all the way around the world 236 million times, then you’ve covered just under one light year!
