Arthur C. Clarke on Light Pollution
Back in 2001, Arthur C. Clarke recorded a short message for the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA). This message languished on a VHS tape in IDA archives for years, until IDA public affairs director W. Scott Kardel discovered it and realised that if he didn’t do something to preserve it, it would be lost to posterity. After some considerable effort to find a working VCR, he managed to digitize the video, and upload it onto youtube.
Clarke worked as a radar technician for the Royal Air Force in the 1940’s and suggested the idea of a geosynchronous communications satellite, but is most famous as one of the most influential science fiction authors of the 20th century. Some of my favourite of his works include 2001: A Space Odyssey (and the sequels 2010 and 2061), Rendezvous with Rama (and sequels), A Fall of Moondust, and The Hammer of God.
